Aare Afe Babalola, a distinguished figure in law and education, has called for a renewed focus on agriculture and sustainable food production as a key strategy to unlock Africa’s vast trade potential. Babalola’s advocacy came as he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Law Association (ILA) at their 8th Annual International Law Conference, held at Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti.

Babalola emphasized that strategic investment in agriculture, coupled with entrepreneurial education, is crucial for Africa’s economic advancement. He believes this approach will not only strengthen food security across the continent, transforming it into a global food basket, but also generate significant foreign exchange earnings and attract vital foreign direct investment.

Babalola’s Key Recommendations:

  • Increased Focus on Agriculture: Babalola stressed the urgent need for African nations to prioritize agricultural development.
  • Sustainable Food Production: He advocated for practices that ensure long-term food security without depleting resources.
  • Entrepreneurial Education: Babalola highlighted the importance of equipping Africans with the skills to build successful agricultural businesses.

According to Babalola, by embracing these strategies, Africa can overcome its reliance on imports, boost intercontinental trade in goods and services, and achieve sustainable development.

Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof, and the President of the Association, Prof. Damilola Olawuyi (SAN).
