Sound Irrigation and new plantings boost Moroccan Orange production

Orange productions has increased in Morocco due to the rational management of irrigation and developing a new irrigation strategy localized in the country and driven by subsidies from the Moroccan government.
The sound irrigation approach was essential due to the delayed rains and water deficit experienced during the 2019/2020 agricultural campaign. Weather conditions remained favorable for MY 2020/21, as temperature has remained mild, allowing for the excellent progress pf flowering and improved fruit quality.
Maturation of young orange orchids planted in large numbers within the Moroccan citrus fruit program was another factor that improved the orange yield this season. The total are planted with the Moroccan oranges increased from 58.7M hectares to 58.9M hectares during MY 2019/20. The led to a boost in production figures for the season to 1.1M metric tons from 806k metric tons during MY 2019/20.
Market Outlook
A COVID-19 response committee has been established by the Moroccan citrus industry to assist the Ministry of Agriculture and port authorities to ensure the stability of citrus exports. This will help the country have to smooth trade of their oranges with minimal logistics issues. The EU and Russia are set to remain the leading export destination for Moroccan organs in MY2020/21, accounting for over 66% of oranges imports.
Lifting COVID -19 restrictions by most European Countries is expected to boostThis time the European demand for Maroc Late oranges from Morocco as the season in Egypt is approaching its end. The Maroc Late Variety seasons starts in May and ends in July. During this season, many growers and exporters prefer selling class 2 oranges locally due to huge demand and good margins. The production and the harvest of Extra Class and Class 1 oranges are intended for the export market.
